Math in Daily Life Lesson Plan: Procedures

1. Begin by asking students how they think math is used in daily life. Suggest that math is used in
cooking and baking. For example, to bake chocolate chip cookies, it is important to follow the
directions in the recipe and measure the correct amounts of ingredients. Measuring requires
using math.

2. Develop a class list of topic areas that make use of math. Examples include the following:

  • Baseball and other sports
  • Board games
  • Music
  • Redecorating a room
  • Sharing food and toys
  • Using money

Math in Daily Life: What to Look for in a Math Classroom (Teachers)

This item was filed under [ In Daily Life ]

Teachers are . . .

  1. Developing skills, facilitating student learning, and creating rea-life learning situations.
  2. Moving around the room to keep students engaged in productive work.
  3. Establishing and maintaining high expectations for the students.
  4. Encouraging students to gain mathematical competence and confidence by finding their own solutions.
  5. Guiding students in exploring multiple solutions to any problem and challenging them to think.
  6. Guiding students in making appropriate use of technology and math manipulatives.
  7. Promoting student use of creativity, inquiry, and higher levels of learning.
  8. Bringing a variety of learning resources into the classroom to increase learning opportunities for all students.
  9. Using assessment that focuses on problem solving and understanding rather than on memory and speed.
  10. Making mathematical connections between disciplines to show how math is a part of other subjects that students are studying.
  11. Helping all students to explore career opportunities that use the mathematics they are learning.

Math in Daily Life: What to Look for in a Math Classroom

This item was filed under [ In Daily Life ]

According to expert and educators, Mathematics is the language of the 21st century. Thinking, reading, writing, picturing, and talking about mathematics are basic skills that help us understand and explain our world.

A math classroom should provide practical experience in mathematical skills that prepare students for the real world.

Mathematical skills go beyond memorization and extend into a world of problem solving and reasoning.

Help your schools to provide the best mathematics available. When you look into a classroom, you should observe the following actions by students and teachers.

Students are . . .

  1. Using math manipulatives (such as blocks, tangrams, and scales), technology
(such as calculators and computers), as well as textbooks.
  2. Applying math to real-life problems and not just practicing isolated skills.
  3. Working independently, as well as interacting with other students.
  4. Working actively together in groups to test solutions to problems.
  5. Working in teams to challenge and defend possible solutions to enable students to learn from one other.
  6. Seeking a best solution among several solutions to a problem, explaining to others how the solutions were reached, and defending the choice of one solution over another.
  7. Communicating mathematical ideas to one another through examples, demonstrations, models, drawings, and logical arguments.

Applications of Math in Movies and Movie-Making

This item was filed under [ Movies and Film ]

If you are wondering what are the applications of mathematics in the movies, ask yourself if you have seen the movies “Finding Nemo”, “Lion King” or “Transformers”. If you have seen at least one animated film or a movie where CGI characters or objects are used, then you must have an idea why math is involved in the movies. Mathematics is behind the graphics or improvement of the graphics in movies.

Just like in the field of robotics, mathematics plays an integral role in making movies. In this day of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI), mathematics is an inevitable tool to make motion pictures (especially cartoons) better to watch.

According to research, 100 powerful supercomputers perform geometrical, algebraic and calculus-based calculations to animate Pixar’s characters. The laws of physics that inform the dynamics of fabric movement are most used in the computations.

Applications of Mathematics in Business: an Introduction

This item was filed under [ Articles on Business and Math ]

The applications of mathematics in business are so many to be contained in a small blog site like this. Perhaps it will take me 3-5 years to post articles in this site just discussing math applications in business. With this in mind I will simplify my approach.

First off, I intend to deal with topics where business and mathematics can truly merge. One of the math concepts applicable to attain this end is trend analysis. Business trends will be analyzed then posted here for the information of the readers. You may, as a reader, suggest a topic here through the comment section.

Importance of Mathematics in Daily Life and to Ordinary People

This item was filed under [ In Daily Life ]

This is an essay about the importance of mathematics in dialy life and to ordinary people. I know fully well that not many people love mathematics. Among students, math is either a difficult or boring subject. It’s not even easy for teachers to make their students love math.

In addition, not many people realize that mathematics is all around us and it’s quite impossible to live without mathematics in our daily life. In fact, mathematics is instrumental in aiding in the development of computer games, sophisticated cell phones like Blackberry Bold 9000 and other technologies like robotics. Mathematics in daily life is important and with this in mind, I hope I can get this message across to readers of this blog especially to students and ordinary people who practically have no idea why math should be studied in school. Let’s enjoy mathematics together. :-) Continue reading…

PS3 Update 2.52: Sony PS3 Updates Firmware Version Again to 2.52

This item was filed under [ Video Games ]

Sony updates its PS3 to version 2.52. The PS3 update to 2.52 is Sony’s second update/upgrade this year. In updating firmware versions, mathematics is important. There are many variables involved in the update because programming a device requires higher mathematics and deep understanding of computer logic.

In the PS3 update to 2.52, some improvements on the following features were made:

A text entry issue that occurs when using the on-screen keyboard, USB keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard with some PS3 format software has been addressed.

The playback quality of some PS3 format software has been improved.

I’m not sure if Sony will update its firmware again before the end of 2008 but I think with their resources and the number of PS3 units they have sold (in millions!), they will try their best to update their products every now and then. Watch out for more PS3 firmware updates or upgrades in the near future.
